Monserrat is a Benedictine monk mountain retreat about an hour north-west of Barcelona. Ian and I, with Chris, Kristie, Lach and Ash, went there on an organised bus tour today.
We passed though some spectacular mountain scenery to reach the monastery and enjoyed the time we spent wandering around the monastery and village.
On our return to Barcelona we discovered that today was Catalonian Independence Day and the city streets were thronged with people wearing red and yellow. This is one year after Catalonia unsuccessfully declared its independence from Spain. Demonstrations went on in the streets near where we are staying for some hours! This was the view from our balcony.
Things had quietened down somewhat by time we set out for our 6pm tour of the Sagrada Familia. This is a famous Catholic church designed by Antoni Gaudi. Despite being unfinished, it is quite beautiful! I will include some photos in the next blog!
