Cruising and walking in Zurich

Sunday 7 June

We started the day with a visit to the Tourist Information Centre where we were able to buy some Swiss power adaptors. We were surprised to find that Switzerland does not use the 'European' power points we had with us.  Luckily we can now use a Swiss one with a European one on top to recharge our phones and tablets!

Across the road from the TI we caught the 10am Limmat River cruise and spent an enjoyable hour travelling down river to the Zurichsee and the Zurichhorn Casino and back. We had lunch at the Zeughauskellar restaurant. We sat outside and enjoyed a traditional veal dish (Ian) and perch fillets (Robyn) both with rosti, followed by some very sweet strawberries for dessert.

In the afternoon we followed the Rick Steve's Zurich walk. Highlights included:
  • the amazing wall and ceiling 'Hall of the Flowers' 1926 painting in the Police Department building;
  • the numerous fountains with water spouts that provided cold water for drinking on this very hot day;
  • the park on the top of Lindenhof where people were playing chess and boule;
  • the little lanes with a medieval atmosphere;
  • Thermengasse (Bath Lane) where the excavated remains of a Roman bath have been preserved under a wire grid;
  • the Reformation era church, Grossmunster; and
  • Fraumunster, with famous wndows by Chagall (whose modernism didn't really appeal to us).

A very interesting walk but quite tiring in the heat so we were glad to get back to the apartment where we dined on cheese and biscuits and watched some TV.

Would you take a drink from this fellow?
